'Car Wash' actor speaks at Widener

Actor, Director Bill Duke to speak at “Dark Girls” Movie Premiere at Widener University

Chester, Pa. – On February 21 Widener University’s Black Student Union will host the premiere of Dark Girls, a film written, directed, and produced by Bill Duke, and D. Channsin Berry, which focuses on “colorism” with the Black Community. Following the screening attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A with Duke, himself.

Known for his height, Duke is a familiar face from the 1976 film, Car Wash and standing along side Kevin Costner in The Bodyguard, among other things. He recently appeared in X-Men. He has also directed a number of films including A Rage in Harlem and Sister Act II. More recently, Duke has been working on documentaries, including Dark Girls.

Dark Girls is a story the focuses on how women of a “darker hue” perceive themselves, as well as how the public perceives them and the emotional toll it has.

The screening and Q&A will be held on Tuesday, February 21 at 4 p.m. in Alumni Auditorium, located off of 14th Street between Walnut Street and Melrose Avenue.

The event is free for all Widener students and faculty. There will be at $10 fee for non-Widener students. The funds collected will benefit Duke Media Inc’s educational foundation. For more information, contact Widener University’s Black Student Union at 610-499-4488 or bsu@mail.widener.edu.
