Wal-Mart names black woman to head Sam's Club

Wal-Mart Stores, the world's biggest retailer, said Friday that it has named Rosalind Brewer CEO of Sam's Club— the first woman and the first African-American to hold a CEO position at one of the company's business units.

FYI, my former IBM boss, Nancy Stewart, although not newly appointed, is Wal-Mart’s Senior Vice President and CTO of Information Systems Division.

The top tech woman at the world’s top retailer, Stewart is in charge of Wal-Mart’s internal infrastructure and technology, as well as the technology for the company’s worldwide operations, facilities, and systems. Wal-Mart is widely lauded for its cutting-edge ways with tech. And just as the retailer’s buying decisions can make or break the suppliers of its 6,700-plus stores, its IT shopping list is of critical interest to Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Microsoft, and other major vendors. Before joining Wal-Mart in 2004, Stewart was at GM and IBM.

Nancy was no joke...whew!

  2. Good point.

There are a bunch of publications that list corporate promotions almost daily. Most of the time they are white people.

Unless you subscribe to Ebony, Jet, Essence, or Black Enterprise, one would think blacks never get promoted.

This posting was for blacks who like to celebrate black achievement. If we saw it more, I wouldn't have posted those ladies.

And, there's an issue with how Walmart treats their black employees. This posting shows another point of view.

    1. I'll admit that I don't buy into 'post racial'. I've experienced too much.

  5. It should read black WOMAN. The word women is plural.

    And congrats to Ms. Brewer.

    1. Ha. Working with Nancy wasn't a very nuturing experince, but I did learn a lot from watching her. She was a VP at the time. All business and no BS is an understatement. It was a great opportunity for me.

  7. Nancy Stewart was horrible at Wal-Mart. She was put in her position for the sake of promoting Wal-Mart image regarding diversity. While in her role, she made sure that minorities were promoted over more qualified candidates. She belittled people for not actively participating. But, when people participated, she'd belittle them for their comments. I don't mind tough managers, but she was a b1tch just for the sake of being a b1tch. Fortunately, she only stayed for a couple of years. Good riddance!
