Chester vs. Philadelphia players compete for a winning title and a greater cause
Chester, PA – On October 30, 2011, Mayor Wendell N. Butler, Jr. will host the first ever Mayor’s Cup “You Read… I Read” Basketball Game. Basketball players from the City of Chester and Philadelphia selected by Mayor Butler, will battle it out for the winning title and more importantly, for the greater cause to help educate Chester’s children through reading.
In partnership with the High School, Mayor Butler decided to hold this event to not only encourage reading through a fun, competitive way that appeals to this great basketball town, but also to set an example by showing the community that Chester’s elected officials highly regard the education of the city’s children.
“With all of the technology that inundates our children today, the importance of reading can’t be underestimated or forgotten,” said Mayor Wendell N. Butler, Jr. “It benefits our children’s cognitive skills and opens directions for them to think, comprehend and develop their inter-personal skills.”
Taking place at Chester High School, located at 200 W. 9th Street, the game will kick off at 2:30 pm. on October 30, 2011. With the greater purpose to encourage learning for Chester’s youth through reading, spectators and participants are asked to bring and donate a book as their only entry requirement. All books will be donated to J. Lewis Crozer Library located in Chester, as well as daycare facilities throughout the city.
Obviously somewhat biased, the Mayor is rooting for his home team with high expectations for a Chester win. “Throughout the years, Chester has produced some incredible basketball talent and I have no doubt that the players participating in this year’s Mayor’s Cup will continue that tradition while also making a difference in our children’s lives.”
