Join the 4-H Dog Club

Would you like to learn about dogs and participate in fun field trips and activities?  Then the 4-H Dog Club is definitely for you!  Both new and returning members ages 8-18 as of January 1, 2012 are invited to an informational meeting on Monday, November 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the 4-H Farm in Newtown Square, located at 395 Bishop Hollow Road.
Youth who join the Dog Club will learn all about dog breeds, dog behavior and the benefits of proper training.  Club members will learn about proper care for a dog, from puppyhood through old age, as well as how to read a dog’s body language.  Grooming and healthcare will also be covered, along with dog related careers such as veterinarian, dog trainer and professional handler.  Members will have a chance to learn showmanship skills in preparation for showing their dog at the 4-H Fair, along with discovering other dog sports such as agility and herding. Throughout the year field trips will be scheduled to dog-related sites, and guest speakers will also be an important part of the program. Dog ownership is not required to join the Dog Club.

A parent or guardian must accompany prospective members to the first meeting on November 14. Please, no dogs at this meeting!  Future meetings will take place on the second Monday of each month.  Kathleen Maher, an experienced 4-H leader and dog trainer will lead the club.  Originally from New Jersey.  Kathleen has raised Bernese Mountain Dogs and Shepherd Mixes, as well as worked with several other breeds including Irish Setters, Shiba Inus, and Huskies. She has experience training and showing in Jr. Show, Conformation, Obedience, Agility, and pet therapy in both 4-H and the AKC.
