Federal Grant Program to Create Jobs and Promote Healthy Food Choices

The federal Department of Health & Human Services’ Community Economic Development (CED) program has made $16 million available (up to $800,000.00 for 20 programs) to support Community Development Corporations (CDCs) that are operating in communities with high unemployment and poor access to healthy foods (called “food deserts” in the Notice of Funding Availability).

Selected CDCs would either expand healthy food choices at an existing retail outlet or create one that supports the health of the community and provides much-needed jobs for residents.

The due date for applications is July 11, 2011.
