Why Don't our children know the Mayor?

Today's Delcotimes article on Governor Corbett's visit to a Chester school starts off with a student asking him if he's the mayor.

During my substitute teaching days, the vast majority of students were convinced St. Rep Kirkland was their mayor.

Is it against the law to teach students who their political leaders are, from City Council to U.S. President? Every school had a picture of Martin Luther King hanging somewhere, but none had a photo of Mayor Butler anywhere.

WHY?

  1. Exactly, Why do we need his picture when Obama's picture is good enough.

  2. Stefan, we are in a sad state of affairs as far as educating our children - in and out of the school building!
Some students do not know that there is a "world" outside of Chester!!
Ask them a general question about their community and you would 'buckle at the knees'.
Some students do not even know their school adminstrators names!!
How do you expect the parents to educate their children about general knowledge things, when they never internalized things themselves?
    'Little known,little required!'
Who is going to step up and educate our children when they are home from school over the weekends, winter and spring break, summertime???
Where are the real community programs? And with the upcoming budget cuts, what resources are out there?

    Sign me, Wondering what's next?
