No Lights on Chester Basketball Courts

Thanks to the Chester Spirit, I’ve learned that a outdoor sports area with a hard soccer field and basketball courts are being constructed on the 7th Street lot between Franklin Street and the Chester Creek.
It would have been nice to have seen an architect’s sketch of the project before construction began to get some community input and excitement. Is there any place we can go to see what it’s going to look like? Ah, never mind. I’m sure that who ever decided on the design has our best interest at heart.
Several years ago, I sat with a City official and asked why we have lights on the tennis court in Memorial Park that very few people use, but no lights on the basketball court that hundreds would use?

I was told, in no uncertain terms, that there will never be lights on a basketball court in Chester. It’s too risky. Crime. Neighbors don’t want to hear the noise all night long.
That particular City official has moved on.
Hopefully, the Chester Spirit account is correct and there will be lights on this new basketball court.
I’d rather see kids shooting jumpers at night than shooting anything else.

  2. That's just like having lights on a football field at memorial park that no one uses but no lights on the high school football field!!!

  3. Not quite. The lights on the memorial park football field are not for games. Its just enough like to continue practice at dusk, but more importantly, those lights keep that area from being totally dark at night.

Do we really want lights on chester high football field? I really enjoy Saturday morning games. That friday night lights stuff was designed for florida and texas who are still very hot in September and october for day games.
