Madea's Big Happy Family has Huge Opening Weekend...but

HUGE WEEKEND
Trailing "Rio" by $1 million was "Madea's Big Happy Family" with $25.8 million. The PG-13 comedy marked Tyler Perry's tenth directing effort in six years, and was the multihyphenate's fourth-best debut, behind "Madea Goes to Jail" ($41 million), "Madea's Family Reunion" ($30 million), and "Why Did I Get Married Too?" ($29.3 million)
To earn a reported $25.8 million in a single weekend for a film that cost $25 million to make is great. Every dollar earned from here on is pure profit. Go Perry.
...the film posted the weekend's largest per-theater average ($11,254) for a wide release, and received a superb "A" rating from CinemaScore graders.
The theaters it played in were packed.
BUT
...the majority of Perry's audience was older African-American women - "Big Happy Family" drew a crowd that was 81 percent African-American, 72 percent female, and 69 percent over the age of 25.
How do they know so much about race and gender? Do they have special tickets for blacks, and women, and age? All I’ve ever been asked by a ticket agent is Adult, Child or Senior.

  1. Just a question___After driving past the Highland Avenue area between 3rd & 4th streets this weekend, I noticed that not only are the sidewalks being cut out for handicap access, but most if not all of the block is being re-done. WHY??? How about the areas in the first ward between 21st and 25th street on Providence road? Heaven forbid if more than 1 extra sqaure inch went past the coutout access upgrade. One other question as a follow-up: Which area of the city contributes more to the tax rolls? Just asking...

  2. I am sure they quantify it by using something like the Neilson rating system. They probably pick a core group of theaters and somehow, someway, count the attendees--race, age, gender, etc...Who knows???

  3. I like the Madea movies. Generally they have always entertained me. This movie is definitely not without its good bits, some parts had me laughing out loud, but the story itself was sketchy and some of the characters coming across as rather cardboard.
