Free Library reaches out to job seekers

Citing statistics from the Philadelphia Workforce Investment Board, Reardon said 550,000 Philadelphians don’t have a significant enough reading level either at the third-grade or the eighth-grade level to apply for a job and really understand an online application.
Noting the importance of digital literacy, Reardon said the library has seen hundreds of visitors who were seeking to apply for jobs online but had never used a computer.
“We really have been working at a very core with folks who are not only illiterate but are completely new to the concept computing and understanding that whole vernacular,” Reardon said.

P.S. Ironically, I had this same conversation with the director of Chester’s Crozer Library this week. Ms. Burno told me that a lot of job seekers need library staff assistance when applying for jobs, and many of them are the young adults who you would expect to be computer literate.
