Chester, PA – On Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at the city council meeting, four members of the Chester Police Chaplain Corps were officially sworn in by Mayor Wendell N. Butler, Jr. and City Council. The Chester Chaplains Corps includes: Rev. Dr. Bayard Taylor, Rev. Dr. William Rocky Brown, Lisa Dennis and Leonard Carroll.
“Composed of an experienced, well-rounded team of spiritual leaders, the Chester Chaplains are doing a great job serving the city, to the benefit of the Police Department and the entire Chester community,” said Mayor Wendell N. Butler, Jr.
Under the direction of the Police Chief Floyd Lewis, the Chester Police Chaplain Corps provides spiritual counsel and support to the Police Department and Chester residents. Serving as part of a department’s Crisis Response Team, the Chaplains receive first hand information about incidents and crimes as they occur in the City and counsel law enforcement officers and their families along with other department personnel.
“With the purpose of lightening the burden for police officers, we as Chaplains are here to perform tasks that have a greater spiritual and social nature,” said senior Chaplain Rev. Dr. Bayard Taylor. “We work to strike a balance between serving the needs of the police department and the community at large.”
The Chaplains also visit the sick or injured officers and department personnel in homes and hospitals, as well as make death notifications. Providing assistance to victims, assisting at suicide incidents, and serving as liaison with other clergy in the community are also a part of the Chester Police Chaplain Corps core duties.
